The activitygroup in association with Mediterm Training offers a variety of courses in Medical Terminology to suit all individual requirements, ranging from a one day Understanding Medical Terminology and Understanding Mental Health Medical Terminology Courses to the Level 2 & 3 Certificate in Medical Terminology. All courses, with the exception of Understanding Mental Heath Terminology courses lead to the opportunity to sit the relevant Mediterm

Mediterm - the UK's largest provider of medical terminology training, we offer a range of courses to suit your needs from beginner through to advanced level.  Our bespoke courses have been designed to suit the needs of healthcare professionals incorporating relevant terminology and content to directly benefit the workplace.  Achievement of the relevant certificate represents real ability in the knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.

Our average success rate is 90% pass at level 2 and 85% pass at level 3 - both higher than the national average.

In addition to our Mediterm courses, we offer two introductory courses:

  • Understanding Medical Terminology

  • Understanding Mental Health Medical Terminology

Level 2 Mediterm Intermediate Award in Medical Terminology - CPD Approved


This course has been designed for people wishing to work in the medical field in such roles as ward clerk, medical secretary, summariser, GP receptionist, clinical coder, administrator, laboratory staff, healthcare assistant, health and social care personnel, medico- legal personnel, ambulance personnel, support workers, medical social workers and health care technicians. It is also suitable for persons already in post who wish to expand their knowledge and skills to obtain the Level 2 Mediterm Intermediate Award in Medical Terminology for Non-Clinical Professionals. 

The course covers the following topics:

  • Basics of medical terminology – word building
  • Common Roots, prefixes and suffixes
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the body systems
  • Prescription writing and abbreviations
  • Medical Specialities and personnel

This course is primarily run on line but with mentored support from a personal tutor. Revision tests, to assess progress and comprehension, are submitted online and marked by the mentor with feedback provided. It is only necessary to be online to download the files and to complete the revision test. These downloads provide the hard copy to study from for the two week period. Each module is studied for a two week period. There are 6 modules (12 weeks) to complete. The recommended study time per module is 6-8 hours per week. Modules must be completed within the two week period. The last module comprises past papers which are marked and feedback and guidance provided. There is also access to crosswords, video clips and clinic letters to enhance learning and prepare for the exam.

For larger groups of students we also offer blended learning where the first module is delivered on site and then the remaining 5 modules are covered online with mentored support.



Level 3 Mediterm Advanced Certificate in Medical Terminology - CPD Approved


This course has been designed for persons wishing to work in the medical field in such roles as medical secretary, practice manager, clinical coder, healthcare administrator and healthcare technician. It is also suitable for persons already in post who wish to expand their knowledge and skills to obtain the Level 3 Mediterm Advanced Certificate in Medical Terminology for Non-Clinical Professionals.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Medical Terminology - Structure of words using prefixes and suffixes
  • Anatomy and physiology of body systems and related terminology
  • Drugs and prescribing abbreviations
  • Abbreviations
  • Cancer terminology
  • Basic Disease Terminology
  • Medical Specialities and personnel
  • Diagnostic services and investigations
  • Surgical and medical procedures
